What's not to believe? You've got, at minimum, the kernel and development environment. Replacing the closed source binary may be difficult but it is doable. ATT1234 mentioned that the UPnP part would be difficult and I pointed out that there are a number of open source solutions available. I think this is doable, it will just be a matter of time. I also feel that we can build something that may be able to work across many of the DSM products. I for one would like to see better WPA support in the WiFi, I'd also like to be able to get a few more video and music formats. I eventually may pick up one of the DSM520 units for hacking with. This holds promise.
